PlayStation Classic Console ANNOUNCED!
Sony have officially announced that they will be soon releasing a “new” console called “PlayStation Classic”
Now what exactly is this? Well, recently gaming companies have been using the nostalgia side of things as a major drawcard for people who used to play during the 90s – and for some of the more hipster millennials who like drinking juice out of old jam jars…
Basically PS Classic is a redesigned version of the PlayStation 1 console but in a 1/3 scale and much more compact. What does compact actually mean? It means there is NO disc input at all. Rather Sony have taken what they feel is there top 20 games from PS1 and pre-loaded them onto the new console.
The design looks identical to the old PS, even including the round part onto to look like a mock disc drive…now that’s not fair as I was hoping it would be able to take some of my old PS1 games that are lurking in a far away hidden box in the garage.
This seems like a great idea right! However, some people have felt that a public poll should have been done, as many of the MOST nostalgic games have been left off the list.
Check out the list below:
Battle Arena Toshinden
Final Fantasy VII
Metal Gear Solid
R4: Ridge Racer Type 4
Resident Evil: Director’s Cut
Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo
Cool Boarders 2
Grand Theft Auto
Oddworld: Abe’s Oddysee
Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six
Where some of your favourites listed above? Probably not… where is Spyro, Tomb Raider, Crash Bandicoot and the like… most of the iconic and memorable games did not seem to make the cut? Deliberate or copyright issues? Maybe Sony will allow upgrades to the console in order to allow players to choose which PS1 games they would enjoy.
Nostalgia seems to be a very big thing right now, where people in their mid 20s / 30s want to relive some childhood memories. Maybe after a long day at work or Uni it might be a great way to unwind, think about the good old days and play some PS1 games for an hour or two. Sony are fully aware of the Nostalgia trend as well as many other Companies such as Nintendo who recently announced a console also with preloaded “retro” games. In the case of Nintendo the games they chose are actually quite amazing and really are iconic, where as Sony have missed a couple here. The PS classic project does seem a bit rushed, and might be a way to make some extra cash just before Christmas.
PlayStation Classic is set to be released on 3 December 2018, and will cost you roughly U$D 170.00
It will be available worldwide, yet the price in South Africa is higher than most at a cost of R1800.00
WHAT’S IN THE BOX?
PlayStation®Classic console preloaded with 20 games
Two controllers, HDMI cable, USB cable, Printed materials
Looking back at some of the older games you can see how far gaming has come, not just in terms of graphics but also user friendliness. Some of these retro games gave you no tutorial or explanation on how the games is played, you were thrown into the world and just left to fend for yourself and figure it out as you went along – which I must say made things a tab bit more fun and interesting. Of course the printed instruction manual was there, but who actually read those? Lets be real, all I did was look at the screenshot inside. Todays games are mostly based on super realism, yet back in the day developers were rather limited and had to do the best with the technology of the time- which still produced some really interesting and artistic looking games. The creativity was immense back then, with not all games needing to look like they were films. A concept which should make a comeback in newly developed games I feel.
Do you think that the PS classic be able to compete with the Nintendo Classic Console?
